1. Distortion and Fuzz
Pitch shifters let you extend your guitar’s range and explore down-tunings on the fly, often eliminating instrument changes. Dialed in for sub-octaves or lowered intervals, they shine when paired with heavy distortion or fuzz.
When paired with aggressive, metal–focused distortion pedals such as the MT-2W Metal Zone or HM-2W Heavy Metal, the XS-1’s razor-sharp pitching capabilities excel at emulating drop-tuned, downtuned, and extended-range guitars.
For example, by selecting a two-semitone (major second) shift downward, a D Standard-tuned guitar can be heard in C Standard without changing instruments or impacting string tension. This works in both Moment mode (allowing players to reach for additional low notes momentarily) and Toggle mode (enabling virtual instrument retuning).
In the above examples, the MT-2W delivers its signature saturation with an XS-1 set either one octave or seven semitones (perfect fifth) down.
Similarly, the HM-2W receives a signal dropped an octave lower, producing guttural bass grind.
The OC-5, XS-1, and XS-100 work brilliantly with fuzz using a thick, doubled sub-octave accompaniment that makes riffs sound massive. As demonstrated, try blending a -1 octave with your dry signal ahead of a fuzz pedal, such as the FZ-1W Fuzz, to achieve a full-bodied, gnarly tone.
2. Stereo Reverb and Delay
Conventional pitch shifters rely on a pitch detection circuit that requires a clear and relatively unprocessed signal to track notes. That’s why they often need to sit at the beginning of your effects chain. Unfortunately, this can hinder creativity, because flexible placement is everything when it comes to unlocking new sounds in combination with other pedals.

One exciting method of enhancing your sound is to pair a pitch shifter with stereo-equipped ambient effects, such as the RV-6 Reverb and SDE-3 Dual Digital Delay. In these examples, Output B feeds the XS-1, while Output A bypasses it.
Pitched an octave up, the reverberated sound of the RV-6 is imbued with radiant shimmer. Meanwhile, the SDE-3 repeats are harmonized using a five-semitone interval (perfect fourth) downward, creating a unique and expansive delay sound. Using an expression pedal, you can take things a step further by adjusting pitch on the fly.
3. Rotary
Using effects to transform your guitar into a completely different-sounding instrument adds new textures to your music while pushing your playing into uncharted territory. Experimenting like this is a lot of fun, and once you start exploring, you’ll quickly stumble upon new sounds you never knew were possible.
Pairing pitch and rotary pedals, such as the RT-2 Rotary Ensemble, produces organ-like tones that work well with slowly strummed chord patterns or gently picked progressions. This sound can be achieved with any pitch pedal capable of generating a simple +1 octave and blending in the dry signal; so the OC-5, PS-6, XS-1, and XS-100 are all suitable options.
In this setup, the RT-2 receives the XS-1’s output, set one octave up with a 50:50 mix of wet and dry signals. This octave-layered effect works together with the Leslie cabinet–like swirl of classic rotary to produce a harmonically rich tone that evokes the depth and movement of a vintage organ.
For added movement and expression, long-press the RT-2’s onboard footswitch to toggle its speed settings. This dynamic modulation produces a sound similar to John Frusciante’s guitar tone on the Red Hot Chili Peppers track “Wet Sand.”
4. Detune (chorus-style)
The Detune mode is a distinctive and versatile feature of pitch shifters like the XS-1, XS-100, and PS-6. It gives you the ability to create lush, chorus-style textures.
